New EPSDT regulations recognize value of continuing pediatric care

New regulations governing the Early Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment (EPSDT) program will, for the first time, provide state Medicaid programs with the flexibility to make greater use of continuing care providers.

Effective at the end of this month, the rules could dramatically benefit pediatric patients, according to District IX Chairman Birt Harvey, M.D. However, the benefits will be seen only if "each chapter acts affirmatively by meeting with their state Medicaid agencies to insist on effective implementation," he said.
