Twenty-five years ago there were no mobiles dangling above infants' cribs and, most likely, the bed sheets were white and untextured. Infants were regarded as "incompetent organisms," unable to understand and profit from such amenities. Longitudinal research has shown, however, that children do benefit from mobiles, colored and textured sheets and other early experiences and encounters. Moreover, studies have indicated that infants have memory ability and the capacity to learn.
