Health status along U.S./Mexico border falls below expectations

Despite expectations for progress, the status of maternal and child health in the four U.S. states bordering Mexico falls far below national averages, warned Doris Howell, M.D., FAAP.

Dr. Howell, professor of pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, presented the results of a recent study during the AAP Annual Meeting which indicate that several programs to reverse these trends have met with mixed success.

"Some innovative and successful projects have been initiated. But, in many cases the slow progress, delays and even regressions have discouraged many practitioners. We must now ask, 'Who will be the good samaritan?'" Dr. Howell said.
