Reye Syndrome chronology

The Academy has been concerned with aspirin use and Reye Syndrome since an association between the two was suspected in the early 1980s. The following chronology outlines the Academy's efforts to inform pediatricians and their patients about this potential health hazard.

1981

March

The AAP Committees on Infectious Diseases and Drugs issue a joint statement based on the findings of studies conducted in Ohio and Michigan that "...have shown an association between the administration of aspirin to children with acute febrile illnesses, particularly influenza and varicella, and the subsequent development of Reye's Syndrome."
