What emerged in the United States as an obscure disease among a few homosexual men has spread to the heterosexual population and affected adolescents, children and even infants. With the spread of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) has come a wealth of research from the medical community. "Never before in the history of medicine has so much been learned about an entirely new disease in so short a time," former Health and Human Services Secretary Margaret Heckler said at an April AIDS conference in Atlanta.
