Proposed Doe rules suggest 'cookbook approach to medicine'

Regulations proposed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to implement the Baby Doe amendment to federal child abuse prevention legislation "suggest a 'cookbook' approach to medicine that undermines reasonable medical judgment and was clearly rejected by the framers of the legislation," said the Academy in comments filed February 8 with HHS.

Of most concern to the Academy were the definitions of "withholding of medically indicated treatment" included by HHS in the proposed rules.
