Saying that there is "more reason than ever to warn the public, especially young adolescents," about the link between aspirin use and Reye Syndrome, the Academy last month announced it "support(s) the intent" of federal legislation which would require warning labels on all aspirin products. At a March 15 hearing held by a congressional panel to consider the legislation, AAP Committee on Drugs Chairman Albert Pruitt, M.D., questioned the effectiveness of a voluntary labeling program instituted in January by U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Margaret M. Heckler. Aspirin makers agreed to the voluntary program after a pilot study conducted by the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) showed a strong link between aspirin use and Reye Syndrome.
