Permanent hike in cigarette tax urged

In an effort to discourage teenagers from smoking, the Academy last month urged Congress to permanently raise the excise tax on cigarettes.

The Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act (TEFRA) of 1982 temporarily increased the federal cigarette tax from 8 cents per package to its present 16 cents per package. Under the law, the tax will revert back to 8 cents per package on October 1, 1985, the end of this fiscal year. The 8-cent tax was instituted in 1951.
