Public-health experts a decade ago predicted tuberculosis would soon go the way of polio and smallpox. Instead, the disease has revived itself with a vengeance. U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) officials once noted steady decreases in the disease rate, and predicted TB would near extinction in the United States in 2010. Now, their optimism lies in looking for decreases in how much TB grows from year to year, leaving them scratching their heads in predicting when the disease will approach the vanishing point.
