Young people suffer emotional pain, negative perceptions: Witnessing violence damages development

From behind a door, a 5-year-old boy witnesses his mother's murder at the hands of her ex-boyfriend. The man comes in, beats and shoots her, then turns the gun on himself.

Later, the boy is sent to live with his great-grandmother. He makes toy guns, and acts out the shooting. Sometimes he is the man, beating and killing the woman, and shooting himself. Other times he is the dead mother, lying on the floor, motionless, eyes open.
