Children who witness violence, particularly domestic violence, might vastly outnumber victims of physical abuse. Witnessing violence affects children at all ages, from the infant who will not sleep, and constantly screams, to the adolescent who follows the same violent patterns he has observed, Barbara Korsch, M.D., FAAP, recently reported. Pediatricians must acknowledge the growing prevalence of children witnessing violence, and its medical and developmental repercussions for the children they see.
