A new therapy for children and adolescents suffering with acute sickle-cell disease pain has been discovered by George Buchanan, M.D., FAAP, and researchers at Southwestern Medical Center at the University of Texas in Dallas. Their study, published in the March 17 New England Journal of Medicine, found the corticosteroid, methylprednisolone, in combination with pain medication given upon hospital admission, helped reduce pain, and shortened hospital stays for young sickle-cell patients by one-third.
