Newly developed criteria might help physicians assess their compliance with state mandates to report suspected child abuse and neglect cases, according to a study in the December 1995 Pediatric Emergency Care. Medical records of 85 abused children, each seen at least twice, were drawn from 1990, 1991 and 1992 child abuse program logs at one urban and one suburban hospital. An average of 4.3 years elapsed between a child's first hospital visit and the index abuse report. Records were audited to find how consistently physicians reported child abuse and neglect to child protective services (CPS) agencies.
