Even moderate social drinking during pregnancy can result in behavioral and cognitive problems in offspring in early adolescence, according to Seattle researchers. Researchers asked mothers to report their alcohol consumption during pregnancy and then followed their children's behavioral and cognitive development from birth to age 14 years. During pregnancy, 80 percent of mothers admitted to some drinking, with the typical drinker consuming half a drink per day during mid-pregnancy. Early in pregnancy, 39 percent reported binge drinking (five or more drinks per occasion), while 24 percent reported doing so in the middle of the pregnancy.
