New tobacco control coalition formed

Gem Benoza

On Oct. 1, the Academy united with 10 of the nation's most influential public health organizations to announce the formation of ENACT (Effective National Action to Control Tobacco), a coalition pledged to achieve national tobacco control legislation as early as spring 1998. ENACT members will work with the Administration, Congress, the public health community and the American people to pass comprehensive, sustainable, effective and well-funded national tobacco control legislation.

To achieve this goal, ENACT has promised to use its combined resources, including its millions of members, volunteers and staff to effect national tobacco control legislation that would build on decades of work by the public health community, the principles of the Koop-Kessler report and the June 20 agreement negotiated between the state attorneys general and the tobacco industry.
