High-risk children eligible for pneumococcal vaccination

Many children fall into the high-risk groups who stand to benefit from new, broader recommendations for pneumococcal vaccination, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.

Pneumococcal disease each year accounts for an estimated 3,000 cases of meningitis, 50,000 cases of bacteremia and 500,000 cases of pneumonia. It also causes approximately 40,000 deaths in the United States each year, mostly among people older than 65 years.
