Anticipated debate during the Burning Issue Session "Generalist vs. Specialist: Balancing the Future of Pediatric Education" was diffused when speakers from both sides agreed that working together is necessary to strengthen the future of pediatric practice and to improve resident education. Putting into perspective the need for a cooperative effort, Evan Charney, M.D., FAAP, quoted Benjamin Franklin: "We must all hang together or separately" Dr. Charney, who represented the view of generalists, is professor and chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, Worcester. "We are in this together," concurred Fernando Stein, M.D., FAAP, associate professor of Pediatrics and Bioethics at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital, Houston, who spoke on behalf of pediatric subspecialists.
