At press time, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced release of a rule that may make it easier for families to deactivate vehicle air bags. Such a rule could pose a significant challenge to pediatricians counseling families about safe transportation of children. "We know that the best practice is (for children) to ride properly restrained in the rear seat and that air bags save lives, but not if they are disconnected," said Marilyn Bull, M.D., during an AAP Annual Meeting plenary session. Dr. Bull chairs the Executive Committee of the Section on Injury and Poison Prevention and is Section Liaison to the Committee on Injury and Poison Prevention (COIPP).
