Old-time spirit harnessed for '90s problem

It's hard to learn when you hurt. Yet many low-income, uninsured children, with parents who can't afford medical care, sit through school each day in pain. Through an innovative, award-winning California program, however, several pediatricians have found a way to give these children the gift of health.

"We really moved back to kind of an old-fashioned idea," explained Don Thomas, M.D., one of the founders of the Young & Healthy project in Pasadena, Calif.
