Pediatricians need no explanation of how the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) of 1988 have taken a tremendous toll on the care of their young patients. Lab procedures that were once accessible, convenient, timely and affordable have become burdened with regulatory paperwork and expense. Now the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) has proposed increasing physician office laboratories' (POL) CLIA fees by as much as 1,000 percent. As a long-time advocate for CLIA relief, the Academy is urging HCFA to halt implementation of these proposed fees. The Academy believes the fee increases are not founded on appropriate accounting principles, are inconsistent with the legislative mandate and do not result in an equitable allocation of fees.
