In the absence of a proven effective antiviral therapy for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection prevention, the AAP Committee on Infectious Disease (COID) has targeted two primary categories of high risk infants as candidates for passive immunoprophylaxis using immune globulin intravenously (IGIV). The two categories are: infants and children younger than 2 years with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) who are currently receiving or have received oxygen therapy within the six months prior to the anticipated RSV season; and infants with a gestational age of 32 weeks or less without BPD or who do not meet the criteria in recommendation one, but may also have a major risk factor.
