As on a conference call, pediatricians and other medical professionals can talk in cyberspace as often as they'd like and not pay any more than a monthly Internet service charge through International Pediatric Chat (IPC), an Internet chat line founded by Julius Edlavitch, M.D., FAAP. Dr. Edlavitch is a pediatrician at the Fridley Children's and Teenagers' Medical Center in Minneapolis. His IPC brainstorm grew out of aggravation with two of his favorite distractions: the Internet and his teen-age daughter. He had joined the Pedinfo listserve (pedinfo@u.washington.edu), an electronic mailing list where e-mail messages are routed to and from members. Although the listserve was a good way to communicate with fellow pediatricians, its lack of immediacy was frustrating, Dr. Edlavitch said.
