Air quality rules face tough fight

There are pro's and con's with every regulation that the federal government issues and clean air is no exception. When the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued proposed rules in December to tighten air quality standards, supporters and critics quickly took their positions.

On one side is the EPA and public health groups, including the Academy, who believe that children, the elderly and others deserve cleaner air for health reasons.

On the other side is the business industry, state and local officials, and some members of Congress who believe the costs that will be incurred to get into compliance far exceed any health benefit.
