Preliminary results from the Pediatric Research in Office Settings (PROS) Febrile Infant Study suggest that pediatricians in practice may be changing the way that they manage febrile infants under 3 months of age. Researchers from PROS and the University of California at San Francisco have analyzed preliminary data on the management of 330 infants from the original pilot study in 1989, and 314 early patients from the present study (1995). Analyses reveal that despite seeing comparable patients, pediatricians managing the 1995 cohort used fewer laboratory tests and were less likely to hospitalize patients than those managing the 1989 patients. An abstract detailing these results (presented at the 1996 Ambulatory Pediatric Association meeting) can be found in Archives of Pediatric Adolescent Medicine 1996;150:P53.
