Intensive athletic training at a young age offers social, psychological and health benefits that far outweigh any potential negative effects, according to a recent study of British students. Using a longitudinal design, the three-year study involved children of prepubertal, pubertal and postpubertal ages. Researchers assessed growth, health and psychological status of 222 females and 231 males by comparing them to standard growth curves. Subjects were coach-nominated athletes who participated in swimming, tennis, soccer or gymnastics.
