By making child development and parenting services part of routine pediatric care for families with children from birth to age 3, Healthy Steps, a landmark national project co-sponsored by the Academy, has the potential to significantly impact the practice of pediatrics. "Our goal is to prevent problems, to use all we know to 'front-end' these problems," and thus save health care and human costs as the child grows older, said Barry Zuckerman, M.D., FAAP., who is pediatrics department professor, chairman, and associate dean for clinical affairs at Boston University, and Boston Medical Center chief of pediatrics and chief medical officer.
