Pediatricians' emphasis on bicycle helmet use among patients over age 1 has increased since 1990 when the Academy began recommending its inclusion in pediatric preventive care visits. This effort has resulted in a perceived rise in helmet use among children age 9 and under, pediatricians reported. According to a 1994 AAP Periodic Survey of Fellows, 9 in 10 pediatricians (93 percent) who counsel patients on injury prevention said they discuss the use of bicycle helmets with patients between the ages of 5 and 12; 62 percent discuss helmet safety with 1- to 4-year-old patients and their parents. These findings represent a slight increase in the number of pediatricians who counseled patients in these age groups in 1990 (88 percent, p <.05 and 57 percent, n.s.*, respectively).
