Symptoms of croup improved significantly in children treated with nebulized dexamethasone as compared with patients given placebo, researchers found. However, due to possible infectious complications, the drug was not recommended for the common respiratory illness. In a double-blind, randomized trial, researchers studied 55 croup-afflicted children in moderate respiratory distress in the emergency department of a children's hospital to see whether corticosteroids could reduce the number of croup hospitalizations.
