Human growth hormone increases lean body mass and functional performance in HIV patients and holds potential for improving quality of life, according to a recent U.S. study. Researchers tested 178 HIV-infected patients who suffered from body wasting, an independent risk factor and an increasingly frequent AIDS-defining condition. The patients, 18 and older who were in the advanced stages of HIV infection, had documented unintentional weight loss and were randomly assigned to receive either recombinant human growth hormone or a placebo.
