Four AAP Fellows appointed to federal positions

Marjorie Tharp

Four pediatricians have an opportunity to leave their mark on federal policy, having accepted prominent posts that deal with such issues as academic health centers, primary care services, drug policy and the health care delivery system.

Appointed to the newly created post of deputy assistant secretary for health within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) was Ciro Sumaya, M.D., FAAP. Dr. Sumaya will chair a working group to review policy options for improving information systems at academic health centers (AHCs). AHCs combine a teaching hospital with a medical school in order to provide professional education, conduct biomedical, behavioral and health services research, and treat patients, for example.
