Luvox (Fluvoxamine maleate) is the first selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) to gain U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance for the treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) in children and adolescents. Characterized by excessive fear, anxiety, doubt and fixations, OCD is experienced by close to one million U.S. children. According to a company spokesperson, three to five children within the average elementary classroom are plagued by OCD, believed to be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain.
