For pediatric pioneer Leon Eisenberg, M.D., FAAP, medicine and social action go hand in hand. "Along with their genes, children inherit their parents, their peers and their neighborhoods," he said. "Cognition and emotion respond to biological and social vectors and are jointly constructed by both." Believing that "it should be possible to prevent adult psychiatric disorders by early prevention," Dr. Eisenberg decided early in his medical career to study the social factors that influence a child's emotional and mental development.
