Recently, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) reported that the majority of pregnancies in this country, nearly 60 percent, are unintended - either unwanted or mistimed.1 Although this is a serious problem among teenagers, the overwhelming proportion of unintended pregnancy occurs among women age 20 and older. Even among currently married women, about 40 percent of pregnancies are unintended.
