Pediatricians should weigh in on early child development

Dear Colleagues:

As you know, the media has been full of reports on the subject of early brain development, including a recent edition of Newsweek, and the Rob Reiner ABC TV-special that aired on April 28th. I suspect the attention to this issue will continue, and while it does, I hope you will weigh in and let your community know how much you can contribute in this area.

The invitation I received from the White House to attend President Clinton's early childhood conference on April 17th gratified me. It demonstrated that pediatricians are considered valuable participants in this discussion. But it is up to us to make sure that fact also is obvious to parents and the rest of society.
