Individual stress levels, rather than coping techniques, seem to determine which pediatric cancer patients suffer anticipatory nausea and vomiting (ANV), a Tennessee study reported. Researchers examined the influence of cognitive factors and conditioning variables in 50 pediatric cancer patients, ages 6 to 18 years. All received ondansetron antiemetic therapy with chemotherapy at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis. The children rated frequency and severity of pre- and post-chemotherapy nausea and vomiting symptoms. In addition, researchers gathered information on subjects' coping strategies, drug treatments, diagnosis and treatment frequency.
