They came from as far away as Hawaii and North Dakota, as well as that other Washington. For the. 104 participants of the 10th Annual AAP Legislative Conference, coming to Washington, D.C., was a rewarding, albeit exhausting, experience. Over two and a half days in April, these pediatricians honed their advocacy skills by attending interactive workshops on such federal and state issues as welfare, Medicaid, parental rights, media advocacy and marketplace dynamics. Mock hearings demonstrated the legislative process and taught participants how to build coalitions, lobby and testify. This year also marked the first time a session was conducted on using the Internet for pediatric advocacy.
