A simple set of "telephone triage" questions can help physicians determine whether a child coughing up blood should be taken to the emergency room or treated in the pediatric office, according to a Florida researcher. Parents or caregivers should be asked: Is the child having trouble breathing? "Yes" directs to the ER. Has the child lost "a lot" or "a little" blood? "A lot" directs to the ER. Has the child fainted or experienced dizziness? "Yes" directs to the ER. Is the source of the blood unknown? "ess"directs to the ER. Once the child can be evaluated in person, the pediatrician first should determine the cause of bleeding.
