I am writing in response to the May AAP News article "Playing with pets can be doggone dangerous" by Stefanie Dell' Aringa. While I applaud Ms. Dell' Aringa's effort to educate pediatricians and parents about zoonotic and animal-related disease and injury to children, I am concerned about some of her information, particularly that relating to dog bite injuries in children. It is true that dog bites are a significant U.S. health problem, affecting more than 4.7 million people annually, most of whom are children. Fourteen people were killed by dogs in the United States in 1996, 11 of whom were children. Six dog bite-related fatalities have already occurred this year, all of them children under age 11.
