Tobacco settlement review begins

Marjorie Tharp

AAP leaders began a detailed review of the tobacco settlement at press time to assess its impact on the health of children and adolescents, particularly in the areas of youth access and use, promotion and advertising, environmental tobacco smoke, regulation of nicotine and health insurance. An AAP position was expected by mid-July.

The reviewers for the AAP Board of Directors are: George Comerci, M.D., AAP past president; Richard Heyman, M.D., chair of the AAP Committee on Substance Abuse (COSA); Manuel Schydlower, M.D., former COSA chair; and Michael Weitzman, M.D., chair of the AAP Committee on Community Health Services.
