The first international CME course, a historical, collaborative venture between the Academy and the Società Italiana di Pedliatria (SIP) took place June 15-20. Three of the countries major academic centers Bologna, Pavia and Padova (Padua) served as course venues, representing the three oldest universities and main centers of medical teaching and learning, dating to before the Renaisance. With an audience of Italian American physicians, day one of scientific sessions began in Bologna With a comparison and discussion of the respective health care systems. Simultaneous translation facilitated an uninterrupted continuity of thought and complete understanding of issues throughout the program. During the hematology-oncology session, we learned of Italy's comprehensive network for pediatric cancer care and research, as well as issues concerning iron-deficiency anemia in the United States and the management of cerebral tumors and neuroblastoma in Italy. A discussion of computer-based pediatric resources included an overview of Pediatric electronic pages, by Jerold Lucey, M.D., editor of Pediatrics. Italian physicians demonstrated their national computer network, CINECA, and reported on the development of primary care office-based data retrieval, as well as software for surveillance of adverse drug reactions and efficacy of specific drug therapies.
