Parents and child care providers need more information about proper sleep positioning for infants, a Washington, D.C., study showed. A questionnaire given to 137 licensed child care centers in Washington, D.C., and Maryland showed almost half the centers were unaware of the association between SIDS and infant sleep positioning as described in the AAP statement, "Positioning and SIDS," which recommends placing babies on their sides or backs to sleep. Three-quarters of the centers did not have written policy statements on proper positioning of infants for sleeping and 57 percent were not aware of current recommendations regarding infant sleep positioning.
