`Hope, excitement' marked first Forum 20 years ago

Twenty years ago, a group of spirited AAP chapter presidents (then called chapter chairmen) established a forum to discuss 22 topics of mutual concern. That first meeting, called the Chapter Chairmen's Forum, has evolved into the Annual Chapter Forum, which this year will present 76 resolutions for a vote.

Those in attendance at the first forum, "were full of hope and excitement, yet uncertain of the structure, recalls Byron Oberst, M.D., FAAP, chairman of the Forum Planning Committee its first two years. Oberst, along with Forum co-founder William Conkling, M.D., FAAP, past AAP Texas Chapter President, will offer their recollections of the first Forum during this year's Annual Chapter Forum Early Arrivals Dinner Sept. 11. The Forum continues through Sept. 14 at the O'Hare Westin Hotel, Rosemont, Ill.

Among resolutions passed at the first Forum were:

• endorsement of the Pediatrics Review and Education Program (PREP);

• support for continued AAP cooperative effort for the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) as the ABP prepares its voluntary recertification process; and

• support for development of a system of no-fault compensation for children who suffer severe immunizations reactions.
