Policy urges pediatricians to become breastfeeding advocates

New insights into breastfeeding and how pediatricians can encourage the practice are part of the long-awaited AAP policy statement "Breastfeeding and the Use of Human Milk," published in the December 1997 Pediatrics.

"Most of what is in there is new material in one way or another," said Lawrence M. Gartner, M.D., FAAP, chairperson of the AAP Work Group on Breastfeeding, which prepared the policy.
