Babies' exposure to excessive noise in utero and in the NICU may result in hearing loss and problems with normal growth and development, according to a summary of studies. Children with high frequency hearing loss tested at ages 4 to 10 years were more likely to have been born to women exposed consistently to 85 to 95 decibels (dB) of occupational noise during pregnancy, according to one study. Four studies showed an increased risk of shortened gestation.
