Grace period extended for implementation of guidelines

The Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) has extended the "grace period" for implementation of the new Evaluation and Management (E/M) Documentation Guidelines (AAP News, November 1997) to June 30, 1998.

HCFA's Center for Health Plans and Providers pushed back the implementation date six months to allow adequate time for education. Despite the extension, physicians are still required to prove that the level of E/M service billed is medically necessary and is supported by documentation in the patient's record.

For copies of the E/M Documentation Guidelines, contact Carla McDonald, AAP Division of Physician Payment Systems, at (800) 433-9016, ext 7931.
