Parents need help with new air bag rules

With the Nov. 18 announcement of new air bag rules by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), pediatricians will probably have to answer parents' questions about the four risk groups now allowed to install on-off switches.

The risk profile groups are those who:

• have vehicles with no back seat;

• have a medical condition that places them at specific risk;

• cannot sit at least 10 inches from the steering wheel; and

• cannot avoid situations, such as a car pool, that require a child 12 or younger to ride in the front seat.
