Carden Johnston, M.D. Birmingham, Ala. Advocacy for pediatricians and children forms the basis of my campaign for vice president-elect of the American Academy of Pediatrics. As an example of my personal commitment to children, my wife Susie and I have been advocates by foster parenting 18 babies awaiting adoption. These experiences have been exhilarating, heartwarming, but at times frustrating, stressful and disappointing. We have gained intimate knowledge of some very special children and of the system that tries to protect them. We, like Judge Gill, have seen some foster children treated as property. We understand on a personal level his call for a Constitutional amendment for rights of the child.
