U.S. sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) rates have declined dramatically, from about 1.4 deaths per thousand children in 1992 before the Academy's recommendation to place babies on their backs to sleep, to a present rate of 0.7 deaths per thousand children, reported National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Director Duane Alexander, M.D., FAAP.
