Spurred by an AAP initiative and a relentless string of fatal child gun accidents, emergency department nurses at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., are hitting their community with a simple message: Guns and kids need to be separated. Nineteen instructors, including nurses, care assistants and residents, have formed a speakers' bureau that has addressed more than 200 community members in 35 presentations since August.
