Pediatricians must transform rhetoric into action on insuring children

Joel J. Alpert M.D., FAAP1

1 President, American Academy of Pediatrics

Dear Colleagues,

The challenges facing our Academy and its members are many and deserve our discussion and appropriate action. Foremost among these issues is our nation's failure to provide every child with health insurance coverage and access to needed medical services. A federal health insurance program would remove the financial barriers that preclude many children from such services. Only a program of universal coverage will allow full access to the services of pediatric generalists and pediatric medical and surgical subspecialists.
